5 REASONS WHY MEN SHOULD CARE ABOUT SKINCARE

Skincare for men? Yes, while skincare is a topic mostly reserved for women, I also know that it is the guilty pleasure of many guys and a lot of them want to be a part of it too without knowing it. You can find my reviews and honest opinions of the skincare products I have tried in The Skincare Journal. It’s no secret that brands are gearing up for a revolution in the skincare / beauty industry with more male centric products and different marketing strategies for men. They have proven successful in fragrances and achieved moderate success in men’s skincare (even with make-up for men in its near future). On that note, let me tell you why men should care about skincare.

1. WE DON’T WEAR MAKE-UP (NOT REALLY ANYWAY)
While it is true that there are men who wear make-up and brands around the world have ventured into the world of make-up for men, a large majority of us do not. For those who do not use make-up, having great, healthy looking skin is the first step we can take. And for those who do wear make-up, whether you’re a guy or a girl, good skin will only help your make-up bring out your radiance and confidence.

2. GOOD SKIN IS FOR EVERYONE
Our skin is the largest organ and as much as a lot of brands like to capitalise on male centric marketing by arguing that men’s skin and women’s skin are different, I am not sure if that is true, or true enough to warrant different products completely (including sometimes a premium). I understand that it is almost impossible to discuss skincare without considering the fragrances that come along with it but many products these days are not as heavily scented as they once were, or are perfume free. Good skin will boost your confidence whether you’re a guy or a girl.

3. GOOD SKIN IS FOREVER
While skincare can cost a fortune, there are so many products to choose from without breaking the bank. There are guys who spend nearly nothing on clothes but then there are guys who shell out loads for fashion – fashion that goes in and out of season. An investment in your skin is an investment in your well being and good skin is timeless. Even though we may need different things from skincare as we age, fashion fades but good skin is forever.

4. YOU'LL THANK YOURSELF FOR IT
Some of us do nothing and look great. For the rest of us, not so much. By no means is my skin perfect, but a healthy skincare ritual is something I have adopted and benefited from. While there was a lot of things I wish I knew and valued when I was younger, I enjoy the steps I am taking now and I feel like I am doing something good for myself. It's really just another aspect of looking after yourself. I actually feel healthy - rather than it just being about appearances. Protection and prevention is easier than to search for a cure.

5. IT'S EASIER THAN YOU THINK
Sometimes when we think 'skincare' as a serious topic, we think of those 10-step skincare rituals with many many layers of products and how complicated it is for such a 'little' benefit. But for guys who don't really look after their skin all that much, taking the first step into skincare can create huge benefits as it is something you haven't done before. We all know water is great - and it's the same for your skin - hydration is key and so is protection. I don't think we all need to do a 10-step skincare ritual at all - it just depends whether you have time, whether you need all those steps in one sitting and whether you enjoy it. I'm confident that most of us cleanse, but for me, I think you can always strip down skincare to what I consider as the 3 most important steps. That is, to cleanse, to moisturise and to use sunscreen. (Hey I'm from Australia, the importance of sunscreen has been drilled into me).
